Video: Mel Brown Sextet (’88)

December 18th, 2008 by John Nastos

Carlton Jackson has just posted another great video to his YouTube collection.  This video is from a 1988 outdoors performance of the Mel Brown Sextet (actually, a quintet since Warren Rand seems to be missing from this gig) featuring Gordon Lee on piano, Tim Gilson on bass, Michael York on tenor saxophone, Thara Memory on trumpet, and of course, Mel Brown on drums.  Carlton mentions in the video info that the band won the grand prize at the Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search that year in Los Angeles, CA.  Since then, this band has remained one of the leading groups in the Portland jazz scene, keeping a steady weekly gig for over twenty five years.

Regular listeners of the modern Mel Brown Septet (every Tuesday night at Jimmy Mak’s) will probably recognize the repertoire.
