King Louie and Sweet Baby James at the Brasserie in January

December 31st, 2009 by John Nastos

n245089786016_8307King Louie and Sweet Baby James will hit two Fridays and Brasserie Montmartre in January, on the 8th and the 22nd.  The band will be rounded out by Renato Caranto on saxophone and Micah Kassell on drums.  This should be a great chance to hear the group in a smaller and more intimate venue.  Also, you get a chance to hear Louis’s new Nord C2 organ.

King Louis and Sweet Baby James on The Square

July 28th, 2009 by John Nastos

When Louis first posted a link to this, he teased it with:

Don’t miss Sweet Baby James’ PG-13-rated response to one of host Joe Smith’s questions. You gotta love live t.v., and you’ve REALLY got to love the one & only Sweet Baby James!

If you have the chance to see this band, you shouldn’t hesitate.  Sweet Baby James is one of the rare surviving members of Portland’s early jazz scene -- a staple of Williams Ave and (get this) he gave Mel Brown one of his first gigs.  Not only is James great, but the band is always smoking.

King Louis and Sweet Baby James will be playing this Thursday in St. Helens for the “13 Nights on the River” festival.

Pictures from Todd Strait

October 17th, 2008 by John Nastos

Todd Strait is a fantastic drummer that spends most of his time on tour, but calls Portland his home.  When he’s on the road, he’s usually playing with Karrin Allyson or Eldar Djangirov.  Back in Portland, he’s a top-call player with the likes of Warren Rand, Dan Balmer, and Dan Schulte.

Todd sent a couple of pictures in this week, including shots from performances with Warren Rand (other band members include Louis Pain and Mike Denny), Eldar, Nancy King, and others.

Head over to the gallery to check out all of the pictures on JazzPDX.org

Mel Brown B3 band celebrates its 10-year anniversary

November 6th, 2007 by John Nastos

On Thursday, Mel Brown and his B3 band will celebrate their 10-year anniversary at Jimmy Mak’s. Mak’s club was the birthplace of the band which has held a regular gig there since the club’s early days at the old location.

Since their inception, the band has recorded a number of CDs, all of which have been live performances.

Mel Brown
Live at Jimmy Mak’s: Back when this album was made, the B3 band was a quintet, featuring Thara Memory and Renato Carranto in the horn section. Louis Pain and ex-Portlander Dan Faehnle joined Mel in the rhythm section. This recording features some of the bands classics, including a number of covers such as “You are so Beautiful” and “What’s Goin’ On.”

Mel Brown
Live at the Britt Festival: This record is a live recording (that the band didn’t know was being made) from the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon where the B3 band opened for George Benson (whom they dedicated one of their tunes). You can even hear Benson’s bass player cheering them on from offstage. The band on this album includes Dan Balmer on guitar, who took over Faehnle’s spot in the group. Also, Memory has left the horn section, leaving Carranto at the reins.

Mel Brown
Smokin’ at Jimmy’s: On their most recent CD, the band is once again expanded to a quintet, this time with Curtis Craft on percussion. The album was recorded live at Jimmy Mak’s during the summer of 2006 and is just what the title says – Smokin’
